Louisiana State Police Investigating Injury of a Suspect While In-Custody for Suspected Traffic and Drug-Related Violations
Louisiana State Police reported that on June 17, 2022, shortly after 9:50 a.m., Troopers arrested 32-year-old Christopher Kornegay of Slidell, Louisiana, for suspected traffic and drug-related violations. Kornegay reportedly complained of neck pain while being processed for booking at the St. Tammany Parish Jail and was medically refused until cleared by a local area hospital. Kornegay was then taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation by troopers. Kornegay was transported back to the St. Tammany Parish Jail for booking after being cleared by medical personnel. Kornegay fell and injured his neck while in the “intake area” of St. Tammany Parish Jail.
Troopers returned Kornegay to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment shortly after 3:20 p.m. Kornegay suffered non-critical injuries. Kornegay will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail after his medical release.
Because the subject was in the custody of Louisiana State Police Troopers at the time of the incident, detectives from the Louisiana State Police Force Investigation Unit (FIU) were called in.
FIU is a statewide unit of specially trained detectives tasked with investigating Department of Public Safety-related incidents such as deadly force, retaliatory force, and in-custody injuries and deaths.
LSP stated that this is an ongoing investigation and that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
