Louisiana State Police Troop D is investigating a tragic incident that occurred on the evening of June 27, 2024, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Reginald Hebert of Kinder, Louisiana. The crash occurred near Botley Cemetery Road in Allen Parish. The incident involved a collision between a motorized bicycle and a 2021 Toyota Camry on U.S. 165.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that Hebert was traveling westbound on Botley Cemetery Road while the Toyota Camry was heading northbound on U.S. 165 in the right lane. According to reports from Louisiana State Police, Hebert failed to stop at the stop sign for the intersection of U.S. 165, entering the northbound lanes of travel. Despite the Toyota driver’s evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision, the front right side of the vehicle was struck by Hebert’s bicycle.
Tragically Hebert was thrown from the bicycle and sustained serious injuries. Reports also indicate that Hebert was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was rushed to a local hospital where, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Toyota, who was wearing a seatbelt, fortunately did not sustain any injuries in the incident.
Standard toxicology samples have been collected and submitted for analysis as the investigation into the crash continues.
Louisiana law classifies bicycles as vehicles, mandating operators to adhere to the same rules as motorists. Additionally, wearing an approved helmet while operating a bicycle is crucial. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of brain injuries and enhance the chances of survival in case of a crash.
Troop D has investigated a total of 7 fatal crashes resulting in 7 fatalities in 2024, emphasizing the importance of road safety for all road users.
Louisiana State Police urge all bicyclists to prioritize their safety by obeying traffic laws and wearing helmets to mitigate the risk of severe injuries in the event of a crash. As the investigation progresses, further details may emerge to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
