Louisiana – On October 3, 2024, Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to two separate vehicle crashes in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes, resulting in the loss of two lives. The incidents serve as a poignant reminder of the need for motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws while driving.
The first crash occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. on LA Hwy 1064 near Durbin Rd in Tangipahoa Parish. According to the preliminary investigation, 55-year-old Albert Johnson Jr. of Albany was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima eastbound when his vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Johnson, who was unrestrained, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Johnson for analysis, and the crash remains under investigation.
Later that evening, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L were notified of a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 21 near Cleland Street in St. Tammany Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed that 35-year-old Glenn Wells of Bogalusa was driving a 2006 Nissan Sentra northbound when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2015 GMC Canyon traveling southbound. Wells, who was unrestrained, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the GMC was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries, and was transported to a local hospital. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.
Both crashes highlight the importance of wearing seat belts while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by up to 45% and moderate to serious injury by up to 50%. Additionally, impaired and distracted driving continue to be the leading causes of crashes in Louisiana. Troopers urge motorists to never drive under the influence and to remain attentive behind the wheel.
