St. Landry Parish, Louisiana – In a span of less than 24 hours, two separate single-vehicle crashes occurred in Louisiana, resulting in the loss of two young lives. The incidents took place in Opelousas and St. Martinville, respectively, and are currently under investigation by the Louisiana State Police Troop I.
The first crash occurred on August 9, 2024, around 10:00 p.m. on US 167 near Harold Street in Opelousas. A 2008 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 23-year-old Marquarious Solomon of Scott, Louiaiana exited the roadway to the right, entered a ditch, and overturned, causing Solomon to be ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately, Solomon, who was unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Toxicology samples were collected for analysis to determine if any substances contributed to the crash.
The second crash took place on August 10, 2024, around 7:00 a.m. on LA 347 near Alexandre Hebert Road in St. Martinville. A 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 22-year-old Ridge Belaire of New Iberia, Louiaiana exited the roadway to the left, entered a ditch, and overturned, causing Belaire to be ejected. Belaire, who was also unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger, whose restraint use is still being investigated, was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries. Toxicology samples were collected for analysis in this incident as well.
Both crashes are still under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the causes of the incidents. However, the Louisiana State Police want to remind the public of the importance of wearing seatbelts, as it drastically decreases the chance of injury or death during a crash. Additionally, distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a leading cause of crashes in the state. By taking simple precautions like wearing a seatbelt, following all traffic laws, and adhering to speed limits, individuals can increase safety on the road.
