Denham Springs, Louisiana – Shortly before 2:30 am on February 24, 2024, Louisiana State Police Troopers responded to a deadly crash on LA 1026 at Gene Buckel Avenue in Denham Springs, Louisiana. The incident resulted in the death of 46-year-old Earl Jones from Denham Springs.

Initial findings showed that Jones was cycling in a westerly direction on LA 1026 when he was struck from behind by an unidentified vehicle also heading west on LA 1026. Jones tragically sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the location of the crash. The driver of the unidentified vehicle did not stop and fled the scene of the collision.

Troopers were able to gather surveillance footage and identify a light-colored pickup truck, which may be a single cab heavy-duty with rooftop lights, as a vehicle they are interested in. The truck is expected to have damage on the front end and the passenger side. Anyone who has information about this crash is urged to contact LSP Troop A at 225-754-8500.

Louisiana State Troopers want to emphasize the importance of bicycle safety by urging cyclists to not assume that drivers can always see them. Taking basic precautions like wearing reflective clothing, avoiding distractions, and wearing a helmet can greatly reduce the chances of accidents resulting in serious injury or death. It is also mandated by Louisiana law for cyclists to ride as close to the right side of the road as possible and obey all traffic laws.
