Lake Charles, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop D is currently investigating a tragic single-vehicle fatality crash that occurred on February 12, 2025, shortly before 4:00 p.m. The incident took place on Interstate 10 East near Hungerford Road near Lake Charles, resulting in the death of 60-year-old Joseph Amos from Lafayette.

According to preliminary reports, Amos was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado in the right lane of the interstate when an 18-wheeler traveling in the center lane began to merge into the right lane. For reasons that are still under investigation, the Chevrolet swerved onto the right shoulder and momentarily reduced its speed. Subsequently, Amos attempted to accelerate on the shoulder in an effort to pass the 18-wheeler. Unfortunately, during this maneuver, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to rotate and veer off the roadway to the right, ultimately colliding with a tree.

Amos was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. In accordance with standard protocol, a toxicology sample was collected from Amos and is currently being analyzed to determine if any substances may have played a role in the incident.

Through their investigation, Troopers have successfully identified the 18-wheeler involved in the incident, as well as its driver. Potential charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information is encouraged to contact Troop D at 337-491-2511.
