Vernon, Louisiana — A two-vehicle crash on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Jackson Parish resulted in the death of a Jonesboro, Louisiana, man and left two others seriously injured. Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to the scene on Riser Road, just north of LA Highway 148, shortly before noon.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 25-year-old Janihajious Phillips, was heading north on Riser Road. At the same time, a 2024 Nissan Versa was traveling south. For reasons still under investigation, Phillips veered left, crossed the center line, and collided head-on with the Nissan in the southbound lane.

Tayvionne Tate, 26, of Jonesboro, Louisiana, was the front seat passenger in the Malibu. Authorities confirmed Tate was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries, dying at the scene. Phillips, who was also unrestrained, sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Nissan Versa, whose name has not been released, was properly restrained with a seat belt and likewise suffered serious injuries, requiring hospitalization.

Investigators suspect impairment. Louisiana State Police collected routine toxicology samples from both drivers, which will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation. Results from these tests are expected to provide more insight into the circumstances that led to the crash.

Louisiana State Police emphasized the critical importance of safe driving practices, including wearing seat belts and avoiding impaired driving. Authorities urge all motorists to make responsible choices behind the wheel.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
