Louisiana State Police Investigate Deadly Crash That Claimed the Life of Unrestrained Driver on LA 23 in Plaquemines Parish

Port Sulphur, Louisiana - A tragic crash on Louisiana Highway 23 (LA 23) in Plaquemines Parish claimed the life of a 71-year-old New Orleans, Louisiana man on Friday, September 6, 2024. The incident occurred around 10:30 am near Songy Lane, involving a 2019 Hyundai Sonata and a 2020 Freightliner Flatbed Truck.

According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop B, the Hyundai, driven by Anthony Roque, was traveling south on LA 23 when it crossed the centerline and struck the left rear side of the northbound Freightliner. Roque, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Freightliner, who was properly restrained, escaped the incident uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.

The Louisiana State Police urge all drivers to take simple precautions to enhance road safety, such as never driving under the influence and adhering to all traffic laws. By doing so, we can work together to reduce the number of tragic incidents on our state's roads.
