A devastating fatal crash occurred on August 25, 2024, in Jefferson Davis Parish, claiming the life of 49-year-old Shawn Maris of Mermentau, Louisiana.

According to the Louisiana State Police Troop D, Maris was riding his bicycle eastbound on U.S. 90 near Triangle Shell Road when he turned left in front of a 2013 GMC Sierra, also traveling eastbound. The driver of the GMC was unable to avoid the collision, striking the bicycle and ejecting Maris. The preliminary investigation revealed that Maris was not wearing a helmet and that his bicycle was not equipped with reflectors or lights at the time of the crash.

Maris suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, while the driver of the GMC was properly restrained and sustained no injuries. Standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis, and the crash remains under investigation.

This tragic incident highlights the need for bicyclists to prioritize safety while sharing the roads with motorists. In Louisiana, bicycles are classified as vehicles, and operators are required to follow the same rules as motorists. Wearing an approved helmet is crucial, as it significantly decreases the risk of brain injuries and increases the chances of survival.

The Louisiana State Police urge bicyclists to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety on the roads. By following traffic laws and wearing proper safety gear, cyclists can reduce their risk of being involved in a fatal crash.
