Louisiana State Police and Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Announce Participation in Annual Click it or Ticket Campaign
On May 23, 2022, Louisiana State Police and Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office both announced participation in the annual Click it or TIcket campaign, including a seatbelt checkpoint in the parish on Saturday, May 28.
The Louisiana State Police have announced that the national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign will run from May 23 to June 5, 2022. A special Border 2 Border (B2B) enforcement initiative will take place on May 23 as part of this effort. Troopers will work with other law enforcement agencies to enforce seat belt laws more aggressively, particularly at state borders. This is an effort to encourage drivers to wear seat belts and understand that wearing a seat belt is the best defense against injury in the event of a collision.
Over the last year, the number of fatal and serious injury crashes has increased dramatically. Unrestrained drivers and passengers were involved in nearly 60% of the fatalities on Louisiana’s roads. Seventy-five percent of unrestrained child passengers under the age of six were killed, while nearly 65 percent of those over the age of six were killed. The number of fatal crashes involving our young adults (ages 15-24) increased by 32%. These statistics are concerning, and simply buckled up can save your life in the event of a car accident.
According to studies, seat belt usage rates decrease during nighttime driving hours, in the back seat, and in pick-up trucks. Troopers will be vigilant and cite anyone who fails to buckle up. Day or night, Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions.
Louisiana State Police said that seat belts protect the body in several ways. During a crash, the seat belt will lock the occupant in the seat and prevent ejection. It then spreads the crash forces across the strong bones of the body when worn properly. The seat belt also allows the body to slow down during the crash, decreasing the chance of internal injuries to the brain and spinal cord. Motorists are encouraged to take a moment to buckle up—every trip, every time.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office also announced on May 23, 2022, that it will participate in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign with grant funding from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. The campaign, which runs from today to June 5, aims to save lives by raising awareness about the importance of wearing seat belts. This campaign covers the Memorial Day weekend, which is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will conduct a seatbelt checkpoint along with increased deputies on the road during this campaign, with the goal of targeting people who are not wearing their seatbelts. On Saturday, May 28, a seatbelt checkpoint will be held in an undisclosed location in the parish.
According to research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up in the front seat of a car can reduce your risk of fatal injury by 45% and reduce the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50%. Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash,” stated Calcasieu Sheriff Tony Mancuso.
Motorists who observe impaired or reckless drivers are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) to reach the nearest troop location or to dial 911.
