Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal one-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 that claimed the life of a Red River Parish man in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Troop E reported that the incident occurred on January 1, 2026, at approximately 1:11 a.m. on I-49 north of Natchitoches, Louisiana. The crash involved a 2025 Kia driven by 42-year-old Chad White of Coushatta.

Initial Crash Details

According to the initial investigation, the Kia was traveling northbound on I-49 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the travel lane. After leaving the lane, the Kia struck a private contractor arrow board — a piece of equipment typically used to direct traffic through work or construction zones.

Following the impact with the arrow board, the vehicle exited the roadway, overturned, and White was ejected from the vehicle. Troopers noted that White was not restrained at the time of the crash.

A passenger in the Kia, who was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries, authorities said.

Injuries And Medical Response

White suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to a local medical facility, where he was later pronounced dead.

The restrained passenger was also taken for medical evaluation but was reported to have only minor injuries. No further information about the passenger was released in the initial statement.

Ongoing Investigation And Toxicology

As is standard in fatal crash investigations in Louisiana, a toxicology sample was obtained from the driver and submitted for analysis. Results have not yet been released, and Louisiana State Police have not suggested any cause, such as impairment or distraction, at this stage.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop E continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Factors such as roadway conditions, vehicle condition, speed, and possible driver behavior typically form part of such investigations, though no conclusions have been made public.
