Louisiana Serious Two-Vehicle Crash on LA 17 Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured

Richland Parish, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop F initiated an investigation into a fatal two-vehicle collision at the intersection of LA-877 and LA-17 on Sunday, December 17, 2023, just before 10:00 a.m. The crash resulted in the tragic death of Cheryl Muns, aged 66, from Epps, Louisiana.

According to Louisiana State Police, initial findings suggest that a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Mary Cantrell, aged 30, was heading west on LA-877 while a 2020 Nissan Kicks was traveling south on LA-17. The Chevrolet failed to yield at the stop sign located at the intersection and collided with the Nissan for reasons that are still being looked into.

Cheryl Muns, who was seated in the front of the Nissan and properly restrained, lost her life at the scene. The driver of the Nissan sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Mary Cantrell suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment. Two young passengers in the Chevrolet were safely restrained and unhurt.

While there is no suspicion of impairment, standard toxicology samples were collected for analysis. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Louisiana State Police have emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety while driving. Troop F has investigated 42 fatal crashes so far in 2023, leading to 50 deaths.
