Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is set to launch a significant initiative to expand the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Starting December 6, 2024, the agency will begin accepting applications for the installation of publicly accessible charging facilities along federal highways. This effort is part of Louisiana’s allocation of $73.4 million through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program.

The NEVI program aims to support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles by providing funding for the installation, operation, and maintenance of EV charging stations. In Louisiana, the initial funding round will focus on installing ten Direct Current Fast Charging (Level 3) facilities, which can charge an electric vehicle to 80% in under 30 minutes. These facilities will be strategically located along the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) designated Alternative Fuel Corridors, ensuring that drivers have convenient access to charging stations on long road trips.

To be eligible for funding, applicants must submit competitive grant proposals that meet federal requirements. The NEVI funds can cover up to 80% of the installation costs, with the remaining 20% required to come from private funding sources. Approximately $10 million has been designated for the first round of funding, which will support ten projects focused on the installation of Level 3 charging facilities.

To assist applicants, the DOTD will host an informational webinar on December 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. CST. The session is open to the public, and registration details are available online. The agency has also made the Request for Proposals (RFP) available on its website.

The DOTD’s vision is to create a comprehensive and accessible EV charging network throughout Louisiana. By strategically deploying EV charging sites, the agency aims to support the growing demand for electric vehicles and reduce range anxiety among drivers.

Further funding rounds will be announced as additional federal funds are secured for the program. With this initiative, Louisiana is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable transportation future.
