Louisiana Sanitation Worker Killed in Crash on LA Hwy 437

Covington, Louisiana – A two-vehicle crash in St. Tammany Parish on December 13, 2024, claimed the life of a 26-year-old sanitation worker, according to the Louisiana State Police. The incident occurred at approximately 6:05 a.m. on LA Hwy 437 near Royal Pine Drive.

Benjamin Bonura of Amite, Louisiana was working on the rear of a 2020 International garbage truck when the crash occurred. The truck was stopped southbound on LA Hwy 437, while a 2024 Hyundai Elantra was traveling in the same direction. The preliminary investigation revealed that the Hyundai failed to stop and collided with the rear of the International, striking Bonura.

Bonura was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the International, who was properly restrained, sustained no injuries. The driver of the Hyundai, also properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Louisiana State Police obtained a routine toxicology sample from both drivers for analysis. The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The Louisiana State Police reminds drivers to exercise caution when approaching stopped vehicles, especially those with workers or emergency responders present.
