Ponchatoula, Louisiana – On May 3, just before 9:30 p.m., Police from Louisiana State Police Troop L started looking into a deadly crash that happened on LA Hwy 445 near Stepp Road in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash resulted in the death of William Edwards Jr., a 67-year-old resident of Ponchatoula, Louisiana.
During the first examination, it was found that Edwards Jr. was riding a bicycle trying to cross LA Hwy 445. At the same time, a 2003 Toyota Camry was heading north on LA Hwy 445. For reasons that are still being looked into, the bicycle moved into the northbound lane of LA Hwy 445 and was hit by the Toyota.
Edwards Jr. was fatally injured in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, who was properly restrained, was unharmed.
Samples for routine toxicology testing were taken and will be analyzed. The crash is currently being investigated.
Louisiana State Troopers want to emphasize the importance of bicyclists not assuming that drivers can see them. It is essential to take precautions, such as avoiding distractions, wearing an approved bicycle helmet, and using reflective materials, to prevent crashes and injuries. Bicyclists in Louisiana are required to stay as close to the right side of the road as possible and obey all traffic regulations.
