Oscar, Louisiana – A 74-year-old woman lost her life after a farming vehicle’s trailers detached and struck her while she stood in her own driveway, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 1 near US 190 in Pointe Coupee Parish shortly before 9:30 a.m. on March 18, 2025. The incident resulted in the death of Susan Shows, a 74-year-old resident of Lakeland, Louisiana.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2024 John Deere tractor pulling tandem tanker trailers was traveling southbound on LA 1 just north of US 190 when the trailers unexpectedly detached. The unsecured trailers veered off the roadway and struck Shows, who was standing in her residential driveway at the time of the crash.

First responders transported Shows to a local hospital with serious injuries where she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities do not suspect impairment as a factor in the crash, though standard toxicology samples will be collected and analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.

This crash remains under investigation, and potential charges will be determined based on the findings.

In the wake of this tragedy, troopers issued a public safety reminder about trailer security. Always properly secure your trailer before hitting the road. Ensure the hitch is locked, safety chains are crossed, and the load is balanced.
