Monroe, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian on Interstate 20 in Monroe on Monday afternoon.

Eugenia Bates, 38, of Monroe was walking on the westbound shoulder of I-20 near milepost 118 when she was struck by a vehicle that veered onto the shoulder, according to authorities. The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on April 7, 2025.

Investigators say that Mecca King, 26, was driving a 2023 Kia Sorento westbound when she gradually moved onto the shoulder of the interstate, striking Bates, who was wearing light-colored clothing. The reason for King’s vehicle leaving the roadway is still under investigation.

Bates suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

King, who was properly restrained, was uninjured in the crash. During the investigation, troopers noted that King displayed signs of impairment. Toxicology samples were collected and will be sent for analysis.

Following the preliminary investigation, King was arrested and booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on charges of vehicular homicide and careless operation. Vehicular homicide is a serious charge in Louisiana typically associated with driving while impaired that results in a fatality.

Louisiana State Police reminded drivers in their statement that “if you feel differently, you drive differently,” encouraging motorists to plan ahead and designate sober drivers to prevent similar tragedies.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
