Louisiana Multi-Vehicle Crash Claims Life of Unrestrained Driver, Injures Others

LaPlace, Louisiana - According to Louisiana State Police Troop B, a tragic crash occurred on October 24, 2023, just after 6:00 p.m. The incident took place on US 61 near Oswald Avenue in St. John Parish and resulted in the loss of life of Asanise R. Fleming, a 34-year-old resident of Reserve, Louisiana.

Initial investigations indicate that Fleming was operating a 2021 Ford Mustang heading south on U.S. 61 close to Oswald Avenue. The circumstances leading to the crash are still being probed, but it appears that Fleming lost control of her vehicle, causing it to cross the center line and enter the northbound lanes of US 61. Simultaneously, a 2014 Peterbilt Commercial Motor Vehicle was traveling south on the same route and collided with the Ford. Following this initial impact, the Ford rotated across the center, re-entering the southbound lanes, where it was subsequently struck by a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis traveling south.

Tragically, Fleming, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from her vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two young passengers, also unrestrained, were present in the Ford during the incident and sustained minor injuries. They were promptly transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately, the drivers of both the Peterbilt and the Grand Marquis emerged from the crash unharmed.

Toxicology samples were collected from all involved drivers and will be sent for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

LSP said that while not every collision may be survivable, statistics reveal that the likelihood of surviving a crash significantly increases when occupants are properly restrained. It is crucial to make responsible decisions when operating a motor vehicle, such as never driving under the influence, ensuring all passengers are correctly restrained, and avoiding any distractions. These choices can often be the deciding factor between life and death.
