A Louisiana motorcyclist was killed, and a Mississippi man was arrested suspected of impairment in a crash in Lafourche Parish.
Lafourche Parish, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop C initiated an investigation into a fatal two-vehicle crash that took place near Banks Boulevard on Louisiana Highway 316. The incident happened just before 10 p.m. on September 15, 2023. Tragically, Dominic Douglas, a 30-year-old man from Houma, Louisiana lost his life in the crash.
An initial probe found that a 2021 RAM 2500, operated by John Vice from Byhalia, Mississippi, was driving south on LA Hwy 316. At the same time, a 2001 Suzuki Hayabusa, ridden by Douglas, was heading north. According to reports from LSP, Vice did not give way to approaching traffic and turned left onto Banks Boulevard, directly in the path of Douglas’s motorcycle.
Despite attempting to stop, Douglas collided with the RAM 2500 and was thrown off his motorcycle.
Douglas, who had a helmet on, sustained grave injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he subsequently succumbed. Vice was properly restrained and did not sustain any injuries.
Throughout the probe, officers noted indications of impairment in Vice, leading to his arrest.
Despite his refusal to provide a sample for toxicology testing, a mandatory search warrant was secured. He was subsequently incarcerated in the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on the charges of vehicular homicide, 4th offense DWI, and not yielding while making a turn at an intersection.
Louisiana State Police indicated that It is unclear if Douglas was also impaired. The toxicology samples obtained from the two drivers are undergoing examination with results pending. The crash incident continues to be under investigation.
Operating a vehicle under the influence of substances such as alcohol and drugs is highly unsafe for the driver and others on the road. These substances can negatively affect reaction speed, judgment abilities, and general cognitive functions, leading to a heightened probability of crashes. So far in 2023, Troop C conducted investigations into 22 deadly accidents, which led to 25 deaths.
An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
