Louisiana Motorcyclist Dies in Morning Three-Vehicle Crash on US 167
Louisiana – According to Louisiana State Police, on November 10, 2022, at about 5:30 a.m., LSP Troop I was notified of a vehicle crash on US Highway 167 south of Derek Road in Vermilion Parish. Michael A. Zuvich, Jr., 44, of Maurice, Louisiana, died in the collision.
Zuvich was operating a 2022 Tao Tao Lancer-150 motorbike north on the outer lane of US 167, according to the preliminary inquiry. At the same time, a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Gage Prejean of Erath, Louisiana was heading north on US 167. The Silverado collided with the rear of the motorcycle, ejecting Zuvich. Zuvich was then struck by a northbound Jeep Cherokee after being thrown into the lane of travel.
Despite wearing a DOT-approved helmet, Zuvich received catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Prejean and the Cherokee’s driver were both securely restrained and reported no injuries. They each provided a breath sample, which revealed no alcohol in either of their systems. Both were tested and showed no symptoms of impairment. Zuvich’s blood was sent in for testing.
Prejean was cited for careless operation under La. R.S. 32:58, and the crash is still under investigation.
Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and therefore more difficult to notice. Drivers must pay attention behind the wheel and keep an eye out for motorcycles. Troopers recommend that all motorcycle riders undergo an approved motorcycle safety course.
