Louisiana Man Sentenced to Prison After Being found in Possession of a Suspicious Package Containing Over 2 Pounds of Heroin

Louisiana – On September 27, 2022, United States Attorney Brandon B. Brown announced that John Monroe Cameron, 45, of Jena, Louisiana, has been sentenced by United States District Judge David C. Joseph for possession of heroin. Cameron was sentenced to 46 months (3 years, 10 months) in prison, followed by 4 years of supervised release.

Cameron was charged with heroin possession with intent to distribute by a federal grand jury on March 9, 2022. He pled guilty to that offense on June 28, 2022. The accusation arose from an investigation into an event that occurred on February 8, 2022, when a USPIS law enforcement agent detected a suspicious parcel at the Shreveport Postal Service. The parcel was sent from Pharr, Texas to an individual in Jonesville, Louisiana. For the package, a search warrant was issued and executed on the same day. Approximately 2.2 pounds of suspected black tar heroin were discovered during the warrant’s execution.

The address on the package was discovered to be an abandoned residence by agents. Agents from law enforcement proceeded to the address to make a controlled delivery of the package. When the agents arrived at the location, they noticed a pickup truck blocking the road. The person, later identified as Cameron, exited the truck and approached the agents, informing them that they had arrived at the correct place and accepted the item. Agents departed the scene, but surveillance caught Cameron carrying the item to a nearby wooded area, where he unwrapped it.

The USPIS and the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Tennille M. Gilreath.
