Louisiana Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison After Methamphetamine is Found in Postal Package

Published December 16, 2021

Louisiana – United States Attorney Brandon B. Brown announced that Derrick Felton, 43, of Alexandria, Louisiana, has been sentenced by United States District Judge Jay Zainey to 188 months (15.6 years) in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, on drug trafficking charges.

Felton was charged in an indictment on July 13, 2018, after a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation into suspicious items discovered by a postal worker delivering mail in November 2017. One of the shipments had a ripped bottom and had been mailed from Los Angeles, California to an address in the Western District of Louisiana. The postal employee opened the package and discovered what seemed to be bags of methamphetamine inside. On each of the three parcels, law enforcement agents from the FBI were notified, and a drug dog was alerted. The parcels were subsequently subjected to a search warrant.

During the search warrant execution, agents discovered a total of 18 pounds of methamphetamine inside each package. The methamphetamine was surrounded by cooking pans within the boxes. When agents examined the cooking pans, they discovered Felton’s fingerprints on two of them. On August 24, 2021, Felton pled guilty and admitted to facilitating the transfer of 18 pounds of methamphetamine to the Western District of Louisiana. The item inside the boxes was found to contain roughly 8 kilograms of a combination or drug known as methamphetamine, according to laboratory analysis.

The FBI and U.S. Postal Service investigated the case and Assistant U.S. Attorneys John W. Nickel and Robert C. Abendroth prosecuted the case.
