A Louisiana man has been ordered to pay over $25k for deer hunting offenses.

A resident of LaSalle Parish was recently declared guilty by a civil court in Louisiana for violations related to deer hunting.

Clifton Brent Sharp, a 61-year-old man from Jena, was mandated to pay $24,269 for civil restitution and an additional $966 for court hearing expenses due to deer hunting offenses. The court ruled that all hunting and fishing licenses in Louisiana held by Sharp are to be invalidated immediately. He is prohibited from applying for new licenses until all his penalties are paid in full.

Enforcement agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries apprehended Sharp on October 24, 2019, on charges of hunting more deer than allowed in a season, neglecting deer tagging regulations, misusing other individuals’ deer tags, and not validating deer tags. Sharp was again penalized in 2020 for the misuse of someone else’s deer tags and not labeling deer as required.

In 2019, agents from LDWF initiated an inquiry into Sharp, under suspicion that he may have exceeded his seasonal deer hunt limit for the 2018-19 season. As the investigation progressed, the agents managed to procure search warrants for Sharp’s properties located in both LaSalle and Catahoula parishes.

Agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as well as the LDWF served warrants and questioned Sharp at his home, where he confessed to killing 16 deer in the 2018-19 hunting season across Cameron and LaSalle parishes. Furthermore, Sharp acknowledged the use of tags that were not his own.
