Rapides Parish, Louisiana – Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop E started looking into a deadly two-vehicle collision on May 28, 2024, around 11:00 p.m. The incident occurred at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 107 and Louisiana Highway 3128 and tragically resulted in the death of Dion Allen, a 49-year-old resident of Lettsworth, Louisiana.
The first examination showed that a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 43-year-old Charlie Hughes from Alexandria, Louisiana was heading east on Louisiana Highway 3128. According to Louisiana State Police, when the Chevrolet reached the intersection with Louisiana Highway 107, Hughes did not stop at the flashing red light. Consequently, the Chevrolet moved into the southbound lane of Louisiana Highway 107 and was hit by a southbound 2007 Nissan Murano.
Louisiana State Police indicated that both the driver and passenger of the Chevrolet were unrestrained at the time of the crash. Hughes, who was driving the Chevrolet, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries after the crash, while Allen, a passenger in the Chevrolet, was killed at the scene. The driver and two passengers in the Nissan, who were wearing seatbelts, only suffered minor injuries. Toxicology samples were collected for analysis.
Although the reason for this crash is still being investigated, distracted driving remains a major factor in crashes in our state. Louisiana State Police is reminding all drivers to remain focused while behind the wheel, as even a momentary lack of attention can result in tragic outcomes.
Although not all crashes can be survived, wearing seat belts correctly can significantly lower the likelihood of death for those involved and can also lessen the severity of injuries. Ensuring that all passengers are properly buckled up can make a crucial difference in whether someone lives or dies.
So far in 2024, Troop E has investigated 24 deadly collisions that led to 26 fatalities.
