Louisiana Man Killed in Nighttime Vehicle-Pedestrian Crash on LA 24

Louisiana – The Louisiana State Police reported on September 30, 2022, that on September 29, 2022, about 8:45 p.m., Troopers from LSP Troop C responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on LA 24 near Stadium Drive in Houma, Louisiana. Albert Legarde, 58, of Houma, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.

The initial investigation found that a 2013 Dodge Charger was going south on LA 24 in the left lane near the Stadium Drive intersection. At the same moment, Legarde was walking east across the south lanes of LA 24 in dark clothing when he was hit by the Charger.

As a result of the collision, Legarde died. The driver of the Charger was securely restrained and did not sustain any injuries.
The driver of the Charger is not suspected of being impaired, and the pedestrian’s impairment is unknown. Standard toxicological samples were taken from the motorist and pedestrian and submitted for analysis. This crash is still being investigated.

Pedestrians should always wear bright/light-colored clothing and reflective materials to make themselves visible to automobiles. Pedestrians should always walk on sidewalks, but if none are available, they should walk as close to the road’s edge as possible while facing traffic. For increased safety, pedestrians should carry a flashlight when walking at night.

Troop C has investigated 36 fatal crashes resulting in 40 deaths so far in 2022.
