Louisiana Man Killed After Running Off the Roadway in Early Morning Crash on US 71

Louisiana – On September 16, 2022, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash on US Highway 71 near Rock Hill. Hunter L. Hayes, 23, of Colfax, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.

The initial inquiry found that Hayes was driving a 2004 Ford F-150 south on US Highway 71. Hayes’ vehicle went off the road, down the ditch embankment, and into several trees for reasons that are still being investigated. Hayes was ejected from the truck as a result of this action.

Hayes, whose restraint usage is unknown, died as a result of his injuries. A toxicological sample was collected and submitted for testing. This crash is still being investigated.

While not all accidents are avoidable, correct use of seat belts can significantly lower an occupant’s risk of death and injury. Making certain that all occupants are properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.

Troop E has investigated 34 fatal crashes so far in 2022, resulting in 36 deaths.
