Louisiana Man Indicted in Connection with Child Sexual Abuse Material After a Tip was Received, Faces Up to 20 Years if Convicted

Louisiana – On November 14, 2022, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Chris Bao Nguyen (“Nguyen”), age 30, of Marrero, Louisiana, was indicted on November 10, 2022, for receipt of child pornography in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 2252(a)(2) and (b)(1).

If convicted, Nguyen faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison, as well as a fine of up to $250,000.00, or the greater of twice the defendant’s gross gain or twice the offense’s gross loss to any person under Title 18, United States Code, Section 3571. In addition, after his release from jail and payment of a $100 obligatory special assessment charge, Nguyen faces a sentence of supervised release of no less than five years and up to life.

According to records presented in federal court, the case against Nguyen began with a CyberTip tip to the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (“LBI”) from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (“NEMEC”). Special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (“HSI”), the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (“LBI”) conducted a federal search warrant at Nguyen’s residence in Marrero. According to the findings of the HSI investigation, Nguyen received photographs and videos portraying minors’ sexual exploitation.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide campaign launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to tackle the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood, led by US Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.
