Louisiana Man Indicted for Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, Faces up to 40 Years if Convicted

Louisiana - A federal grand jury in New Orleans, Louisiana returned a four-count indictment on October 20, 2022, charging a man with violations of the Federal Controlled Substances Act.

According to court documents, Cody Shaughnessy, age 38, is charged in Counts 1, 2, and 3 with distribution of methamphetamine, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(B). In Count 4, Shaughnessy is charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(B).

Shaughnessy risks a mandatory minimum penalty of 5 years and up to 40 years behind bars, a fine of up to $5,000,000, at least 4 years of supervised release, and an obligatory special assessment fee of $100 if convicted.

Shaughnessy allegedly distributed 50 grams or more of methamphetamine between August and September 2022, according to the indictment. On August 25, 2022, Shaughnessy was also found with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charging document and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Hammond Police Department, and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office all looked into the case. Assistant United States Attorney Lynn E. Schiffman is in charge of the prosecution in this case.
