Louisiana Man Indicted for Carjacking, Drugs, and Gun Crimes Faces up to Life in Prison

Louisiana – A Louisiana man has been indicted for carjacking, drugs, and gun crimes, and now faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
Darrion Young, age 37, a resident of New Orleans, LA was charged on February 11, 2022, in a six-count indictment by a federal grand jury for carjacking, brandishing, using, and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and distribution and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
Young faces a maximum sentence of fifteen years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, and up to three years of supervised release if convicted of carjacking.
Young faces a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000,000.00, and at least three years of supervised release if convicted of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances.
If convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, Young faces up to ten years in prison, a $250,000.00 fine, and up to three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
If convicted of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, Young faces a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of life in prison, to be served concurrently with all other charges, a $250,000 fine, and up to five years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
If convicted of brandishing, using, or carrying a firearm during and in relation to a violent crime, Young faces a minimum term of seven years in prison and a maximum term of life in prison, to be served concurrently with all other charges, a $250,000 fine, and up to five years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
Young also faces a $100 mandatory special assessment fee for each of the six counts of the indictment.
This case is being prosecuted as part of the federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s efforts to reduce violent crime. PSN is an evidence-based program that has been shown to reduce violent crime. PSN brings together a diverse range of stakeholders to identify the most pressing violent crime issues in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and collaborates with community-based prevention and reentry programs to achieve long-term crime reductions.
U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Trummel is prosecuting the case.
