Louisiana Man Found Guilty of Manslaughter and Feticide of Pregnant Woman and Unborn Child
The Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office announced that On April 18, 2022, Vernell A. Chatman, Jr., 35, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was found guilty on one count Manslaughter; and one count Second Degree Feticide.
Chatman choked and brutally beat an 8-month pregnant woman in 2019 before abandoning her body in the freezing cold. As a result of their injuries, the victim and her unborn child died.
Chatman is being held in jail without bond. Judge Michael Canaday will preside over the sentencing on July 22, 2022.
Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office Assistant District Attorneys Charles Robinson and Taylor Alexander prosecuted the case.
