Louisiana Man Faces up to 15 Years For Mail Theft And Possession of Postal Key After Pleading Guilty in Federal Court

New Orleans, Louisiana – A Louisiana man now faces up to 15 years in prison for mail theft and possession of a postal key after pleading guilty in federal court.

On April 25, 2023, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Kelan Perry Gennings, age 21, pleaded guilty on April 13, 2023, to a two-count superseding indictment charging him with theft or receipt of stolen mail matter, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1708 and unlawful possession of a postal key, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1704, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.

Gennings, according to court filings, stole US mail from a post office mailbox at the Covington Post Office. Gennings also accessed the mailbox using a postal arrow key. Gennings faces a potential prison term of five years for mail theft and ten years for possession of the arrow key during his sentencing on August 17, 2023. Each count carries extra penalties of up to three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and a $100 obligatory special assessment fee.

The US Postal Inspection Service looked into the matter. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis of the General Crimes Unit.
