Louisiana Man Faces Possibility of Life in Prison for Christmas Eve Armed Bank Robbery

Louisiana – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Devin Chaney, age 32, of New Orleans, was charged today in a two-count indictment with one count for bank robbery in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a) and (d) and one count for use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence pursuant to Title 18 United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A)(ii).

On December 24, 2021, Chaney robbed the Capital One Bank in New Orleans, Louisiana, according to the indictment. Chaney used a firearm during the bank robbery.

Chaney faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, up to five years supervised release after imprisonment, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee if convicted of armed bank robbery. Chaney faces a mandatory consecutive minimum sentence of seven years up to a maximum of life imprisonment, a $250,000.00 fine, up to five years supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee if convicted of brandishing a firearm during the bank robbery.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s efforts to reduce violent crime. PSN is an evidence-based program that has been shown to reduce violent crime. PSN brings together a diverse range of stakeholders to identify the most pressing violent crime issues in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and collaborates with community-based prevention and reentry programs to achieve long-term crime reductions.

U. S. Attorney Evans reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
