Louisiana Man Dies in Single-Vessel Boating Incident in Lake Pontchartrain, LDWF Investigating Cause

St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana – Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) agents are investigating a fatal single-vessel boating incident that occurred in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana on January 8, 2023, in Lake Pontchartrain after a body was recovered.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported on January 17, 2023, that enforcement agents are investigating a fatal single-vessel boating incident that occurred on January 8 in St. Tammany Parish.

On January 16, around 4:40 p.m., the body of William C. Coile Jr., 45, of Mandeville, Louisiana, was recovered from Lake Pontchartrain. He was found about three-quarters of a mile offshore from Mandeville.

When an unmanned vessel was discovered floating in Lake Pontchartrain on January 8, LDWF agents, along with the US Coast Guard and the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office (STSO), began searching for Coile Jr. Since January 8, LDWF agents and STSO deputies have been searching for Coile Jr.

The LDWF will lead the investigation into this fatal boating accident. At this time, it is unknown what caused Coile Jr. to enter the water. His body was recovered without a personal flotation device and turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for an official cause of death to be determined.
