DeSoto Parish, Louisiana – A 50-year-old Natchitoches man died early Tuesday morning following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 near Louisiana Highway 177, according to Louisiana State Police Troop G.
Lawrence Irchirl lost his life around 4:30 a.m. on November 5, 2025, when his 2002 Ford F-350 collided with an 18-wheeler parked on the roadway during a series of crashes caused by dense fog conditions.
The preliminary investigation by state troopers revealed that the fatal incident began when a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer traveling northbound on Interstate 49 crashed in heavy fog, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn. This initial crash blocked the northbound lane and triggered additional collisions as other vehicles approached the scene in low-visibility conditions.
Moments after the first crash, Irchirl’s Ford F-350 approached the location and struck an 18-wheeler that had stopped on the roadway with another motorist inside. Despite being properly restrained with a seatbelt, Irchirl sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several other drivers involved in the series of crashes were also properly restrained. Multiple motorists sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment at the crash site. Louisiana State Police investigators do not suspect impairment played a role in the incidents, though toxicology samples were collected from drivers and submitted to a laboratory for standard analysis.
Dense fog conditions are a known hazard on Louisiana roadways, particularly during early morning hours when temperature drops create low visibility.
Interstate 49 serves as a major north-south corridor through central Louisiana, connecting Shreveport to Lafayette and carrying thousands of commercial and passenger vehicles daily. The highway near Louisiana Highway 177 passes through rural areas of Natchitoches Parish where fog can settle heavily over roadways during certain weather conditions.
Louisiana State Police remind motorists to reduce speed, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights when driving in foggy conditions. High-beam headlights reflect off fog and can actually reduce visibility further.
