Louisiana Man Dies From Injuries Sustained in Motorcycle Crash After Police Attempted to Stop Him for Speeding

Lake Charles, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police reported on May 17, 2022, that on May 6, 2022, shortly after 8:30 p.m., Troopers began investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Enterprise Blvd. and Broad Street in Calcasieu Parish. John Blake Baldwin, 27, of Sulphur, was killed in the crash.

Troopers observed a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling south on LA 27 near US Hwy 90 at a high rate of speed, according to the preliminary investigation. Troopers determined that the motorcycle was traveling at 77 mph in a 55 mph zone. Troopers attempted to stop the motorcycle, at which point the operator, later identified as Baldwin, increased his speed to over 100 mph. As he continued to travel on I-10, state highways, and city streets, Baldwin committed numerous traffic violations. Baldwin was ejected from his motorcycle after it collided with a raised concrete curb near the intersection of Enterprise Boulevard. and Broad Street.

Baldwin, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet at the time of the accident, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The crash was caused by excessive speed; impairment is unknown. This crash is still being investigated.

Troop D was notified on May 16, 2022, that Baldwin had died as a result of his injuries.

Troop D has investigated 7 fatal crashes resulting in 8 deaths in 2022.
