Louisiana Man Cited for Turkey Hunting Violations and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile After Allegedly Baiting an Area

Evangeline Parish, Louisiana – A Louisiana man was cited for turkey hunting violations and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile after allegedly baiting an area.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) reported that on March 30, 2023, enforcement agents cited a Turkey Creek, Louisiana man for alleged turkey hunting violations on March 25 in Evangeline Parish.

According to reports, agents cited Darwin W. Nelson, 43, of Turkey Creek, Louisiana, for hunting turkey over a baited area and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

On March 21, agents reportedly discovered a corn-baited area near Cypress, Louisiana. Agents set up surveillance on the baited location on March 25 and witnessed Nelson place a turkey decoy in the baited area. Nelson and a juvenile then crept behind some camouflage netting and actively called for turkeys.

As agents saw Nelson leave the hunting area, they made contact with him and the juvenile. Nelson admits to putting out the bait in the hopes of attracting turkeys so the juvenile may harvest one.

A $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail are imposed for hunting turkeys over a baited area. Contributing to a juvenile’s delinquency can result in a $500 fine and six months in jail.

Corporal Tib Guillory and Corporal Jason Stagg are the agents involved in the case.

A person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
