Louisiana Man Arrested Suspected of Swerving and Causing a Crash that Seriously Injured Another Person

Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana – A Louisiana man has been arrested suspected of Aggravated Second Degree Battery in connection with a motor vehicle crash that left a driver with serious injuries.

On January 17, 2023, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet announced the arrest of a Chauvin, Louisiana man in connection with a motor vehicle crash in which a driver suffered serious injuries. Brian James Authement Jr., 31, of Chauvin, Louisiana, was arrested for Aggravated Second Degree Battery in connection with the incident.

On January 14, 2023, shortly after 11:00 a.m., the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) Patrol Division responded to a motor vehicle crash in the 6000 block of Bayouside Drive. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a male subject laying in a ditch near a wrecked dirt bike, clearly injured in the left leg and foot. Deputies observed the Little Caillou Fire Department administering medical aid to the male prior to the arrival of Medical Services. Before being transported to an out-of-area hospital for medical treatment, patrol deputies spoke with the driver of the dirt bike, who stated that a truck swerved into his lane, causing the accident.

Deputies were able to identify and confirm that Brain Authement Jr. was involved in the crash and that he saw the dirt bike speeding on Bayouside Drive. During an interview, Authement admitted to driving into the dirt bike’s lane of travel with the intent of stopping and confronting the driver. Authement confirmed that the dirt bike collided with the front of his vehicle before the driver was ejected.

TPSO Deputies continued the investigation by speaking with witnesses on the scene, who provided information indicating that Authement’s actions appeared to be deliberate in causing the contact with the dirt bike. The Louisiana State Police were called to the scene to assist with the investigation, and evidence at the scene indicated that Authement was to blame for the accident according to police.

In connection with the investigation, Brian Authement Jr. was arrested and booked into the Terrebonne Criminal Justice Complex on charges of Aggravated Second Degree Battery. Local judges have kept Authement in jail on a $150,000 bond.

This is an ongoing investigation, and the TPSO will look into any legal violations that may have contributed to the incident. More information will be made available as it becomes available.

Sheriff Tim Soignet thanked the TPSO Patrol Division for their efforts, as well as the Louisiana State Police for their assistance. Sheriff Soignet said, “This is an extremely unfortunate incident, that should have been handled very differently. Today, there is a Terrebonne Parish resident recovering from a serious injury that did not have to happen. We urge residents to contact the TPSO to handle all matters of perceived violations of law.”

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
