Calhoun, Louisiana — On May 19, authorities reported that they had arrested a Louisiana man in connection with a fatal single-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a passenger on Interstate 20 in Ouachita Parish. The incident, which occurred on the evening of April 6, 2025, is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop F.

According to officials, the crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. when a 2013 GMC Acadia, driven by 69-year-old Patrick Gallagher, veered off the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 near milepost 101 and struck a tree. The sole passenger, 72-year-old Alfred Gallagher of Monroe, Louisiana, was seated in the rear and properly restrained. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Patrick Gallagher, also properly restrained, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Initial investigative efforts included the collection of routine toxicology samples. After further analysis, authorities determined that Patrick Gallagher was impaired at the time of the crash. Impairment in this context refers to being under the influence of substances such as alcohol or drugs, which can significantly diminish a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely.

Based on these findings, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F obtained an arrest warrant for Patrick Gallagher through the 4th Judicial District Court. The charges include vehicular homicide, careless operation of a vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Vehicular homicide is a felony charge applied when a death occurs due to a driver’s violation of traffic laws, particularly when impairment is involved. Gallagher was arrested without incident and booked into Ouachita Correction Center.

The investigation continues as authorities work to gather additional details regarding the events leading up to the crash. Police have not specified the exact substances involved, noting only that impairment was a contributing factor.

State police urge all motorists to take road safety seriously, emphasizing the dangers of driving while impaired or distracted. Impaired driving not only endangers the driver but also passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians. Law enforcement officials encourage drivers to make responsible choices, such as using designated drivers or alternative transportation, to prevent tragedies like this one.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
