Evangeline Parish, Louisiana - A Ville Platte man has been arrested and charged with aggravated arson after fire officials determined he intentionally set a fire in a senior living apartment complex for elderly and disabled residents in Ville Platte, Louisiana. William McBride, 56, faces serious charges following the incident last Friday, August 1, 2025, which compelled emergency response from the Ville Platte Fire Department shortly before 9 a.m.

Smoke alarms inside the building alerted residents, allowing for a quick and safe evacuation with no reported injuries. According to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, after an investigation, McBride was identified as the suspect believed to have started the fire within one of the units. The cause was ruled intentional, classifying it as aggravated arson—an offense describing the deliberate and knowing setting of a fire that endangers human life or property.

The swift response by local firefighters and the presence of working smoke alarms played a crucial role in preventing harm to the vulnerable population residing in the complex. The State Fire Marshal’s Office expressed gratitude to the Ville Platte Fire Department for its partnership and effective efforts to assist in both containing the fire and ensuring a prompt investigation.

At this time, authorities have not reported whether bail has been set for McBride, and the case remains open as officials continue to gather additional information.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
