Louisiana Man Arrested Charged with Firearms Charges, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespassing, and Other Crims After a Police Chase

Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana –  A Louisiana man has been arrested and charged with speeding, flight from an officer, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, criminal trespassing, and outstanding warrants after leading police on a chase in Houma, Louisiana on January 5, 2023.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet reported that a Houma, Louisiana man was apprehended in the early afternoon hours of January 5, 2023, after leading officers on a short pursuit on Houma’s Eastside. Shawn David Broyard Jr., 30, was arrested in connection with the incident on charges of Speeding, Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Resisting an Officer, Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Criminal Trespassing, and outstanding warrants for the Houma Police Department.

A Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle near Thompson Road for a speeding violation shortly before 1 p.m., but the driver refused to stop and led Deputies on a brief chase that ended near the Presque Isle community. While Deputies were attempting to detain the driver, the male suspect ran on foot into a nearby subdivision. The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Houma Police Department in apprehending the driver after a caller reported seeing a man suspect hiding in the backyard of a property in the 100 block of Presque Isle.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and Houma Police Officers arrived to the scene and found the male suspect, who was placed into custody peacefully. During the course of the investigation, Deputies discovered two weapons in a bag that were thought to be in the custody of the male suspect when he fled on foot. Deputies identified the male suspect as Shawn David Broyard Jr. after further investigation. In addition to being a Convicted Felon, deputies confirmed that Broyard had outstanding warrants from the Houma Police Department for an unrelated matter.

Shawn Broyard was questioned in connection with the incident and eventually admitted to having the bag containing the firearms but denied knowing what was inside. Broyard was then put into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on various offenses and is now being held on a total bond of $285,000 by local judges.

Sheriff Soignet praised the patrol division of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office and thanked the Houma Police Department for their cooperation in the event. Sheriff Tim Soignet said, “The Deputies and Officers did an amazing job in keeping the public safe during a dangerous situation. This situation had the potential to end very differently, and our community is safer now that he is in custody.”

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty.
