Louisiana high school students who excel in civics education will soon receive special recognition at graduation through a new diploma endorsement program approved by state education officials.
The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) announced the Freedom Framework Diploma Endorsement, which will be awarded to students who score Mastery or above on the LEAP 2025 civics assessment. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, qualifying students will receive a distinctive diploma seal and a red, white, and blue honor cord to wear during commencement ceremonies.
“Graduating with a strong understanding of government and our nation’s history sets students up for academic success and informed civic engagement,” said Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education. “This new diploma endorsement highlights Louisiana’s commitment to strengthening civics education.”
The initiative aims to recognize and encourage student achievement in civics, which encompasses understanding of government structures, constitutional principles, and American history.
Connection to Freedom Framework
The new endorsement aligns with Louisiana’s Freedom Framework, the state’s K-12 social studies standards adopted in 2022. This curriculum framework, championed by Superintendent Brumley, focuses on presenting American history chronologically while highlighting both the nation’s exceptional qualities and its ongoing development.
The 2023-2024 academic year marked the first full implementation of these standards in classrooms across Louisiana. According to LDOE officials, the revised curriculum introduces more rigorous content in a more coherent manner while ensuring students develop essential analytical skills.
Part of Broader Recognition System
The civics endorsement joins Louisiana’s existing diploma endorsement system, which recognizes student achievement in specialized areas. These endorsements allow students to showcase their academic interests, accomplishments, and career readiness directly on their high school diplomas.
By highlighting civics achievement specifically, Louisiana education leaders aim to emphasize the importance of understanding democratic principles and civic responsibility as students transition to college or careers.
Education experts note that strong civics education helps develop critical thinking skills and prepares students to participate meaningfully in democratic processes throughout their lives.
