Louisiana Launches Free Autism and Needs Accommodation Vehicle Indicator Program

By Calcasieu Staff

Published December 01, 2023

Louisiana - The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles has announced that Louisiana residents and their guardians are now able to apply for a free Autism Spectrum Disorder or Needs Accommodation indicator for their vehicle.

These indicators, which are affixed to the rear window, serve to inform law enforcement officers that someone in the vehicle may have an Autism Spectrum Disorder or a mental, physical, or developmental disability. They are also recorded on the vehicle registration.

Proper documentation is needed to obtain or replace a decal. To obtain either an Autism Spectrum Disorder decal or a Needs Accommodation decal, one must provide a statement from a licensed medical or mental health professional confirming the diagnosis. If the applicant already has a Louisiana driver's license or identification card with the indicator, no additional documentation is required. The applicant can request removal of the indicator at any time without needing documentation.

In case of loss, applicants can visit any Louisiana OMV field office or public tag agent location to request a replacement decal, provided they can show proof of the flag on the registration or vehicle record.
