Louisiana Inmate Charged with Battery and Contraband Charges After Allegedly Striking a Guard Attempting to Confiscate Contraband

Union Parish, Louisiana – An inmate in Louisiana has been charged with battery and contraband charges after allegedly striking a guard who was attempting to confiscate contraband.

The Union Parish Sheriff’s Office (UPSO) stated on March 9, 2023, that in February 2023, personnel at the Union Parish Detention Center (UPDC) told the UPSO Criminal Investigations Division that a dorm check had turned violent, sending one UPDC guard to the hospital with head injuries.

Authorities reported that they learned that a guard was making rounds inside a detention center dorm when he noticed what seemed to be a cell phone charging cable. The guard spotted a cell phone hidden within a magazine after additional scrutiny.
As the officer seized the phone, Chad Scott, 41, an inmate at UPDC, reportedly attempted to reclaim it. When the guard began to take Scott from the dorm, he aggressively resisted, striking the guard with his head. Several more jail guards rushed in and overpowered the inmate. One guard was bleeding from the nose and had been hit in the head several times, necessitating emergency medical attention.

The event also resulted in the injury of a second guard, who received many scrapes and a bruise on their arm.

Scott was charged with two counts of Battery of a Correctional Officer and Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution; both are felony charges.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
