Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Louisiana’s Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) made a significant step toward embracing the future of transportation by hosting the state’s inaugural Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) Innovation Day on April 30 at its Baton Rouge headquarters.
The event, co-organized by Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) and Stantec, brought together industry leaders, technology developers and transportation officials to showcase advancements in autonomous vehicle technology and discuss its implications for the state’s transportation infrastructure.
DOTD Secretary Joe Donahue emphasized the importance of staying current with emerging vehicle technologies as part of the department’s mission to provide safe, reliable transportation for Louisiana residents.
“Our focus at DOTD is providing a safe and reliable transportation system for the people of Louisiana, and staying at the forefront of emerging vehicle technologies helps to ensure that we are keeping our economy moving and our communities connected,” Donahue said during the event.
The day-long program featured hands-on exhibits of cutting-edge transportation technology, displays of autonomous vehicles, and presentations from industry experts. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about how these innovations could potentially reduce traffic crashes, improve mobility and create new economic opportunities throughout the state.
Louisiana has recently become more involved in the autonomous vehicle sector, with companies like Waymo beginning to test self-driving robotaxis on the streets of New Orleans within the past year. The state is among 35 that have enacted specific legislation governing autonomous vehicles, allowing for commercial operation of AVs on public roads.
Josh Fleig, Chief Innovation Officer at Louisiana Economic Development, highlighted the economic potential of embracing transportation technology.
“Louisiana Economic Development is committed to making Louisiana a leader in emerging vehicle technologies, which increase safety and efficiency on our roadways and spur our economy,” Fleig said. “We’re excited to welcome these tech innovators to Louisiana and show them what a great place our state is to do business.”
The innovation day represents Louisiana’s proactive approach to preparing for a transportation landscape increasingly shaped by automation and connectivity. By bringing together stakeholders from government, industry and technology sectors, the state aims to position itself advantageously as these technologies continue to develop and deploy across the country.
As autonomous and connected vehicle technology continues to mature, events like CAV Innovation Day provide valuable opportunities for public education and engagement on how these innovations may transform mobility, safety and economic development in the coming years.
