LaSalle Parish, Louisiana — A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on Louisiana Highway 8 resulted in the death of a Texas man, according to Louisiana State Police Troop E. The fatal incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on May 18, 2025, just west of the intersection with Louisiana Highway 774.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 BMW, driven by 57-year-old Earl F. Hickerson of Missouri City, Texas, was traveling westbound when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Authorities stated that the circumstances leading to Hickerson losing control of the vehicle remain under investigation.
Officials confirmed that Hickerson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. State police collected toxicology samples, which have been submitted for further analysis. Investigators suspect impairment may have been a contributing factor, but official results are pending.
Louisiana State Police emphasized the importance of safe driving practices. They noted that alcohol, prescription medications, and other drugs can significantly impair judgment, reaction time, and coordination. These effects can increase the risk of crashes and lead to serious consequences for everyone on the road.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. State police urge all drivers to make responsible choices, such as always wearing a seat belt and never driving under the influence of any substance. According to state data, not wearing a seat belt and driving while impaired are major factors in serious and fatal crashes across Louisiana.
