Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on August 3, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Louisiana Highway 1 near the Echo community, resulting in the death of 59-year-old Rickey G. Maddox of Alexandria, Louisiana. According to the initial investigation, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 34-year-old Romero H. Roberto left the northbound lane and struck a 2013 Kubota lawn mower operated by Maddox on the highway's northbound shoulder.
Authorities report that Maddox suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Roberto, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was unharmed. Toxicology samples were collected from Roberto as impairment is suspected to be a factor in the incident.
On August 4, troopers arrested Roberto on charges including vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated (first offense), careless operation, no driver's license, and expired license plate. Roberto was booked into the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center as the investigation continues.
Vehicular homicide is a felony in Louisiana, defined as causing the death of another person while operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Penalties for conviction include fines ranging from $2,000 to $15,000 and imprisonment for five to 30 years, depending on factors such as blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or prior offenses.
