Baton Rouge, Louisiana – A devastating multi-vehicle crash occurred on LA Hwy 42 (Highland Rd.) at Interstate 10 in East Baton Rouge Parish on September 7th, 2024, resulting in the death of 92-year-old Mary Harris of Prairieville, Louisiana, serious injuries to two others, and one man arrested.

According to the Louisiana State Police, the incident took place around 2:00 p.m. when 76-year-old Wayne J. Green of Kenner, driving a 2003 Toyota Highlander, exited the I-10 off-ramp at a high rate of speed and struck the passenger side of a 2020 Acura RDX traveling northbound on Highland Rd. The impact pushed the Acura across the median into the southbound lanes of Highland Rd. before it came to rest in a ditch. Green’s Toyota also collided with a 2020 Ford Raptor, and debris from the crash struck a 2025 Hyundai Tucson.

Harris, a passenger in the Acura, was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Acura was also transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Green sustained serious injuries and was taken into custody upon his release from the hospital. He will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of negligent homicide, negligent injuring, and reckless operation.

Louisiana State Police emphasized the importance of responsible driving, reminding motorists to always follow traffic laws, avoid driving while impaired or distracted, and ensure all occupants are properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking these simple precautions can often mean the difference between life and death.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
