Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Louisiana’s top officials have issued a statement following the decision by the President’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to temporarily pause all disbursements of federal financial assistance. This action, prompted by President Trump’s directive to reduce government waste, has left state leaders seeking clarity on its potential implications.
Note: At the time this was published, a federal judge had temporarily blocked the freeze on federal grants and loans.
Governor Jeff Landry, State Treasurer John Fleming, Senate President Cameron Henry, and Speaker Phillip DeVillier issued a joint statement expressing their commitment to the President’s goals. They emphasized the importance of maximizing the effectiveness of taxpayer dollars while ensuring the financial stability of Louisiana’s state resources.
“President Trump was elected on a mandate to cut government waste and increase the impact of every federal taxpayer dollar, a goal we whole heartedly embrace,” the officials stated. They underscored their administration’s ongoing evaluation of the new order, indicating that they are in the process of determining the extent of its effects on state funding.
The pause in federal assistance raises concerns regarding various state programs and initiatives that rely on these funds. Louisiana officials assert that they believe the state currently has adequate resources to maintain stability in the short term. They urged the OMB to create a responsible plan to untangle the state from any unnecessary and burdensome policies that could jeopardize its financial health.
