Louisiana – Louisiana State Fire Marshal deputies are investigating two separate fatal fire incidents that occurred overnight in the state. The first incident took place around 9:30 p.m. on Mayo Road in Shreveport, where responders from the Caddo Fire District #6 discovered a house fire that resulted in the death of a man. Just hours later, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Oak Hill Fire District responded to another house fire on Padgette Road in Hineston, which claimed the life of an elderly male victim.

Both investigations are currently ongoing, as officials seek to determine the causes of these tragic events. In light of these incidents, State Fire Marshal Chief Bryan J. Adams has issued a call to action, urging families to adhere to essential home heating safety tips. He emphasizes the importance of sharing this information with friends and loved ones to prevent further tragedies.

To promote safety during the colder months, the following tips are recommended:

  • Space heaters should be placed at least three to five feet away from combustible materials, such as blankets and clothing.
  • All heating appliances must be plugged directly into wall outlets rather than using power strips or extension cords, which can pose a fire risk.
  • Stoves and ovens should not be utilized as a source of heat for homes, as this practice can lead to dangerous situations.
  • Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves should not be overfilled, as this can lead to uncontrolled fires.
  • Candles and open flames, including space heaters, should never be left unattended to prevent accidental fires.
  • It is essential to have working smoke alarms installed in homes, as these devices provide critical alerts in case of fire.

In addition to these preventative measures, the State Fire Marshal’s Operation Save-A-Life program collaborates with local fire departments to provide free smoke alarm installations for families in need. This service is available year-round, ensuring that everyone has access to this vital safety equipment.

Furthermore, the State Fire Marshal emphasizes the importance of planning and practicing escape routes within the home. Families should be aware of two ways to exit every room, ensuring that everyone knows how to respond in the event of a fire emergency.
