Webster Parish, Louisiana – Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop G commenced an investigation into a tragic collision involving four vehicles on I-20, west of US 371, in the early hours of Saturday, February 3, 2024. Sadly, the crash resulted in the death of Savanah Shelton, a 20-year-old from Houston, Texas.

During the initial inquiry, it was found that 20-year-old Marcus Baggett was driving a 2022 Dodge Charger heading east on I-20. At the same time, another unidentified vehicle, referred to as Vehicle 2, was also traveling in the eastbound direction on I-20. Following Vehicle 2 were a 2023 Hyundai Palisade and a 2006 Toyota Sequoia.

It is still being investigated why, but Baggett started driving in the opposite direction, heading west in the eastbound lanes of I-20. As a result of his actions, Baggett collided head-on with Vehicle 2. Subsequently, Vehicle 2 caught fire after the collision. The Hyundai and Toyota then collided with each other while attempting to avoid the crash.

The driver of Vehicle 2, identified as Shelton, was declared dead at the crash site. The front seat passenger of Vehicle 2 sustained severe injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. Five more passengers in the Hyundai and Toyota vehicles experienced only minor injuries.

Baggett exhibited signs of being impaired and was subsequently taken into custody during the investigation. A sample of Baggett’s toxicology was obtained and is currently awaiting analysis.

Baggett was then placed in the Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center and is facing charges of vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular negligent injury, and six counts of vehicular negligent injury. The investigation into this crash is still ongoing.

Impaired drivers are responsible for almost half of the fatal crashes in Louisiana. Consuming alcohol and drugs can negatively impact your ability to make decisions, see clearly, have precise motor skills, and react quickly. It is crucial to never drive when you are impaired, tired, or distracted, and to adhere to all traffic regulations. Before consuming any alcohol, it is essential to have a plan in place to ensure a safe ride home. In addition, buckling your seat belt in just three seconds is your best protection in the event of a traffic crash. Always make sure that all occupants are properly restrained during every trip, without exception.

Troop G has conducted an investigation into a single fatal accident in 2024, which sadly led to one fatality.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
